A Guide To Writing A Sympathy Note or Condolence Message

Writing a condolence note can be very difficult, even for the most eloquent writer. Everyone is concerned about the "right" thing to say and feel that they are stumbling over their words.

Many people put off writing because they are uncomfortable and do not know how to express their feelings. Yet, a simple note can be a wonderful source of comfort to the bereaved, not just during the initial loss, but for many months to come.

Sympathy notes need not be lengthy. The basic element of a sympathy note is sincerity.

Suggestions for writing a sympathy note:

1. Acknowledge the Loss and Express Your Sympathy - Reflecting your simple words of sympathy let the bereaved know that you share in their sorrow and they are not alone.

2. Share Memories or Special Qualities - Use the name of the deceased and share a special time together or a story that captures the personality and traits of the deceased. A simple "I will always remember..." can be the start of a joyful sentence.

3. Offer Assistance - Do not offer assistance unless you are committed to following through. Be specific with your offers, such as babysitting, running errands, grocery shopping, cleaning, or walking dogs.

4. Close With A Sympathetic Phrase - Simple expressions of sympathy such as "With Love and Remembrance", "With Our Love and Deepest Sympathy As We Remember "name of deceased", "My Heart Is With You In Your Time of Sorrow" are examples of ways to close a note.
