Examples of Sympathy and Condolence Notes

If you can't seem to find the words to express your sympathy, we've created a few examples of what to write in a sympathy card.

Words seem inadequate to express the sorrow felt by the loss of George. I extend my deepest sympathy on the loss of your precious husband.

George was such a thoughtful, caring person. I remember many years ago I had a flat tire and it was pouring rain. One quick call to George and he was by my side within minutes, changing the tire and singing in the rain while doing so. He would do anything to help someone in need. He will be sorely missed and never forgotten.

I am available this weekend and would like to stop by and assist with any errands you have. I'll contact you on Friday.

With much love and sympathy,

It was with deep sorrow that I recently learned of the passing of your son, Edward.

While I know that mere words cannot console you and Bill, I wanted you to know that I am here for you, if you need anything at all. I'll be in touch.

I will always hold the memory of your beloved son in my heart.

With deepest sympathy,

I was so sorry to hear about the loss of Susan. Words just cannot express my sadness.

My life has been enriched since meeting Susan in college. I have so many memories of our late night chats and the laughter we shared. Her gentle spirit and warm personality was a beacon to all.

"Some people come into our lives,
leave footprints on our hearts,
and we are never the same."

My dear friend will never be forgotten.

I pray that the love of family and friends will give you strength in the days ahead.

Example of Sympathy Note When You Do Not Know the Bereaved:

My name is Michael Ferrier and I worked with your husband Stan at Brinkley Marketplace.

While we never had the pleasure of meeting, I wanted to express my condolences on the passing of your husband. Stan's kind-hearted nature and good humor will be missed by everyone here. When I first began working at Brinkley, Stan took me under his wing and taught me the ropes. I will always be grateful for his patience and encouragement.

If you need any assistance in getting in touch with Brinkley's HR department regarding benefits and insurance questions, please do not hesitate to contact me so I may lend a hand.

Wishing you comfort and peace.

Example of a Condolence Note When You Did Not Know the Deceased:

My deepest sympathy on the loss of your mother.

Although I never had the privilege of meeting her, I remember how moved I was when you shared the story of the song she wrote for you on your 30th birthday. Her love for you and her sense of humor were certainly apparent in her music.

My heart is with you.
